Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Consolidated Gypsum (CG) in Edmonton South is a building supply distribution campus consisting of nearly 60,000 square feet of covered loading dock and warehouse space and an adjacent 16,300-square-foot retail space. The two-story showroom serves diverse markets— design professionals, contractors, dealers, and “do-it-yourself” consumers. CG hired Starr Design to create a high-end retail showroom to provide display and educational resources for more than 2500 wall, ceiling, and roofing products.
Starr Design conceived the interior environment as a 3-dimensional display for distributed building products. Ceiling and wall products can be observed in their intended applications. Demonstration displays provide information for specification and installation. The structure’s existing ceiling posed architectural challenges that provided unique opportunities to showcase intersecting, overlapping, curved and angled ceiling structures.
To serve the showroom clientele and the associated warehouse procedures, Starr Design created logical zones for functional adjacencies— sales area, design specification and education, large and small item restocking areas. The ground plane circulation is reinforced above by the overhead ceiling and lighting features. All fixtures are demountable and mobile. The 2nd floor provides open, versatile space for the company’s current programming of hosting special events, and can be readily adapted for showroom expansion.
Consolidated Gypsum’s branch manager comments:
“Curiosity alone is bringing the public into our place. The design is friendlier and offers a unique shopping experience.”
